Protect Your Eyesight with these 4 Tips

One of the most important things you can do in order to improve your lifestyle and make sure you live a fulfilling existence is to protect your eyes. There are eye problems that at one time or other will affect a large percentage of adults. As we begin to age, our risks for incurring additional eyesight issues only increase.

In fact, age is one of the leading causes of vision getting worse and people getting blind in the United States. Some of these diseases from aging that cause vision to get worse include: cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. That said, protecting eye sight over the years is a strong portion of your overall health care as you age.

Here are 4 tips we have for protecting your eyesight:

1. Eat right and healthy

There are countless studies that have been done that show that antioxidants, certain vitamins (A, C, and E), minerals, and fatty acids can sometimes reduce the risk of eye issues such as cataracts. You can get these antioxidants through eating a balanced diet that include leafy green veggies and the right kinds of fruit. Of course, a good multivitamin can help do the trick as well. Eat the right types of foods and get the right nutrients to ensure adequate eye health as you age. There are also unique challenges for women and again, and women’s multivitamin supplements should be considered to be added into a daily diet to ensure proper bone and hormone structure.

2. Avoid smoking, alcohol, and stimulants

Whole drinking and taking lots of stimulants can do damage to blood vessels by constricting and limiting blood flow, we should focus the most on smoking and eye health. People who smoke are at a much greater risk for developing the eye diseases we mentioned such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Additional constriction and the damaging of blood vessels from smoking does the eyes no favors when it comes to protecting vision over the years.

3. Get checked for eye disease regularly

Getting an eye exam, even if you do not currently wear glasses, every single year (or at least every other year) can check for any major eye illnesses that do not carry early warning signs. Eye exams can make sure that if you do wear prescription glasses or contacts that you are up to date with it. Always check with your doctor because if you do not get checked regularly, loss of vision can happen much more often; and macular degeneration is much more likely to occur.

4. Protect your eyes

While it is important to protect your eyes from flying objects by wearing safety glasses at work and while playing sports, it is just as essential to wear prescription computer glasses if working in front of a computer screen for long hours during the day. In fact, working at your desk and staring at your monitor for eight to ten hours each day can be incredibly strenuous and aging on your eye health over time. Wear the right eye protection and take frequent breaks to make sure your eyes do not strain too easily from the blue light.


Of course there are no guarantees that you will have perfect vision that lasts through the years: even if you follow the tips above perfectly. Getting checked out regularly, eating right, avoiding smoking, and wearing proper protection eye wear are four tips that you can take to protect your eyesight both in the short term and in the long term.
